Family Biography Examples
All examples are fictional or composite. None depict real people unless they are public-domain historical figures explicitly identified as such.
Three fictional family biographies in different lengths and formats. Use as inspiration for the tone and structure of your own.
Example 1 — Birthday tribute (300 words)
For Margaret O'Connor on her 90th birthday

If you want to know what Forest Avenue looked like in 1948, ask Margaret. She arrived from County Mayo at twelve, the youngest of seven, and she has lived within a half-mile of that apartment ever since. She used to say she had two childhoods — the Irish one, which she half-remembered, and the American one, which she remembered too well.

Margaret taught second grade at P.S. 41 for thirty-two years. She started in 1958, when she was twenty-two, and she stayed until 1990, when the school changed enough that she didn't recognize it anymore. She knew every child in her class by name on the second day and she kept their first writing exercises in a series of cardboard binders that now fill the back closet of her apartment.

She married Tom in 1961 — they met at a parish dance in Astoria — and they raised Mary, Patrick, and Elizabeth in the apartment two blocks from where her parents had landed. Tom passed in 2008, and Margaret kept his chair where it was, by the window.

Margaret is the unofficial historian of her block. She knows whose grandmother was a nurse, whose father drove a cab, who married whom in 1972, and who got their first apartment the same year as everyone else. She bakes an Irish soda bread every Sunday for sixty years now, and she still brings it to anyone whose week has been hard.

Ninety years. Seven brothers and sisters. Three children, seven grandchildren, two great-grandchildren. One Sunday loaf for sixty years. We love you, Mom. We love you, Grandma. Happy birthday.
Why it works: Warm without being saccharine. Specific details that only a family member could write. Direct address at the end.
Example 2 — Family-book chapter (450 words, opening)
Chapter 1 — The Crossing

Margaret Ellen O'Connor was born on March 17, 1936, in County Mayo, Ireland — a coincidence of date that she would never quite live down, given the name, the country, and the parish. She was the youngest of seven children. Her mother, Bridget Walsh O'Connor, had been forty-one when Margaret was born; her father, Patrick, had been forty-eight. Margaret's older siblings were closer in age to her parents than to her.

By the time Margaret was twelve, her parents had decided to emigrate. The reasons depended on which of her siblings you asked. Patrick Jr. said the farm was failing. Sean said their father had a job offer through a cousin in Queens. Eileen said their mother was tired. Margaret herself, when she told the story, said all three were true, and that the truest reason was probably the last one.

They left Galway on March 4, 1948. The crossing took eight days. Margaret remembered a single, specific moment from that journey: her mother washing her hair in a basin in the women's berth, two days out from port, with the boat rolling enough that the water moved like a small sea inside the basin itself. Margaret said she remembered the smell of the soap and the way her mother's hands felt — and then nothing else of the entire voyage.

They arrived in New York on March 12. Bridget's sister Maeve and her husband Eamon met them at the dock, took them by subway to a three-room apartment in Astoria that Eamon had rented for them, and gave them, in Margaret's words, "a pot, a pan, and three days to figure out the rest of our lives."

The apartment on Forest Avenue was a half-block from the elevated 31st Street platform and three blocks from the church the family would attend every Sunday until Patrick Sr. died in 1971. The apartment had two bedrooms, a kitchen with a small table, a bathroom shared with the family next door, and a window in the front room that looked onto the avenue. Margaret slept in the bedroom with her sister Eileen for two years. She would sleep in that same bedroom — first with her sister, then alone, then with her own children when they were sick, then alone again — for the next seventy-seven years.

She did not remember being unhappy in those first years. She remembered being cold. She remembered the food being different. She remembered her mother's accent being the same as it had always been, but suddenly noticeable, in a way it never was at home.
Why it works: Past tense, deliberate pacing, specific details (the basin, the soap, the apartment layout, the bedroom continuity). Names other family members. Lets the reader hear Margaret's voice through reported speech. Spends most of the chapter on the few hours that mattered most.
Example 3 — Immigration narrative (400 words)
Linh's Story

Linh Nguyen was nineteen when she left Vietnam, in May of 1979. She was the third of four children, the oldest girl, and the only one in her family who had finished high school. Her father had been a pharmacist in Saigon; after 1975, he sold the pharmacy and bought, in installments, three places on a boat.

The boat held forty-two people. Linh remembered the woman next to her vomiting for the first two days and apologizing in a whisper each time, as if there were anything to apologize for. She remembered her younger brother sleeping for sixteen hours straight on the third day. She remembered the smell of diesel and the way her mother kept her hand on the small of Linh's back the whole way, as if Linh might float away if she let go.

They were picked up by a Norwegian freighter on the fifth day and brought to a refugee camp in Hong Kong. Linh and her family stayed there for eleven months. She learned the English her teachers in Saigon had taught her was not the English anyone actually spoke, and she set out, with a notebook and a pen borrowed from a Norwegian aid worker, to relearn it.

They were resettled in Houston in April of 1980. Linh worked at a fabric warehouse for two years to help her parents pay the rent on a one-bedroom apartment off Bellaire Boulevard. In 1982, she enrolled at the University of Houston, where she studied accounting, paid her own tuition by working evenings at her uncle's restaurant, and graduated in 1986. She was the first person in her family — siblings, parents, grandparents — to hold a college degree.

She has worked as an accountant in Houston for thirty-seven years now. She married Hieu Tran in 1988. Together they raised three children — Linda, David, and Anna — all of whom she taught to write a thank-you note before they were six.

Linh's father died in 1995, her mother in 2009. Her younger brother, the one who slept the third day, is a pediatrician in Austin. Her uncle's restaurant closed in 2003, but the building is still there. The fabric warehouse is a Target.

Linh still keeps the Norwegian aid worker's pen.
Why it works: Specific dates, specific places, specific moments. The hands-on-the-back detail. The borrowed pen. The structural rhythm — Vietnam, the boat, Hong Kong, Houston, the family she made — without compressing any of them too much.
Common patterns
- Specific dates and places. Each biography names months, years, neighborhoods, and street addresses.
- Sensory and concrete details. The basin of water, the diesel smell, the pen. These are what make family biographies feel like a person.
- Reported speech. A direct quote from the person being written about, used sparingly.
- Past tense for the life, present tense for what continues. "Linh still keeps the pen."
