Short Bio vs Long Bio: Which One Do You Actually Need?
Updated May 20, 2026 · Biography.co editorial
You don't need to choose. Most people need both — and the most efficient approach is to write the long bio first, then trim it.
Use a short bio for
- Conference programs and printed agendas
- Speaker session listings (50 words is common)
- LinkedIn About (the first 100 words are what gets read)
- Email signatures
- Newsletter bylines
- Podcast guest intro blurbs
- Resume summaries
- Company team page entries
Use a long bio for
- Personal website About pages
- Speaker microsites and full speaker pages
- Press kits and one-sheets
- Book jacket back covers (long-form authors)
- Investor decks (often a long version on the team slide)
- Acquisition or business sale listings
- Author retailer pages
How to write both at once
A practical workflow:
- Write the long version first (~250 words). Use the full structure: identity, credibility, prior work, current work, human detail, closing line.
- Cut to the medium version (~150 words). Remove one credibility detail, one prior-work sentence, and the secondary human detail.
- Cut to the short version (~75 words). Keep identity, the single strongest credibility line, and a closing detail.
- Cut to the byline version (~25 words). Keep identity and one credibility detail.
Each cut goes faster than the last because you've already done the structural work.
What stays in every version
- The identity line — who you are and what you do.
- One credibility signal — a named company, a specific number, a published work.
- Where you live or how to find you.
What changes between versions is the number of credibility signals, the depth of prior-work context, and the room for personal detail.
